Mr. Ballast taught interior construction and other courses for twenty years at Arapahoe Community College. A licensed architect in Colorado and an NCIDQ certificate holder, Mr. Ballast has authored many books published by PPI on design topics and ARE review.Holly Williams Leppo, AIA, is an NCARB-certified architect, an NCIDQ certificate holder, and a LEED AP. Ms. Leppo has authored and co-authored several ARE and LEED exam review books published by PPI. She holds a bachelor of integrative arts degree from The Pennsylvania State University and a master of architecture degree from Washington University in St. Louis.Rima Taher, PhD, PE, has been teaching ARE review courses in general structures and lateral forces since 2002 at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where she received a university-wide award for teaching excellence. Dr. Taher earned her master of science and doctorate degrees in civil engineering from the historic and prestigious École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris. She has also lectured on the topic of wind engineering and structural design for high winds and hurricanes at the Wind Engineering Research Center at the Tokyo Polytechnic University. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. The Ballast ARE 5.0 review manual and associated practice problems and practice exams are absolutely terrible. They're FULL of editing mistakes, spelling errors, missing words, and erroneous information. The Practice Exams and Practice Problems books are full of terribly worded questions, questions that don't apply to the topics covered by the exam division, and questions that rely on obscure and unrelated assumptions which would never be on the actual exams. Many questions say "choose 4 that apply" and when you go to the solutions to review your answers, you find that there are only 3 correct solutions. These materials make it HARDER to study for the exam divisions because they have so many confusing and poorly worded practice questions. One of the Practice problem sections titled "Contracts" started with a question about the selection of an HVAC system for a given project. Unacceptable.These books are not worth the hundreds of dollars they're charging. It's clear the company rushed them to market to be the first study guide available for the new exam format but in doing so they published a horrible resource FULL of errors. This is unacceptable for the amount they charge and the statement that their books are "comprehensive" study materials.
Got this for my husband for him to study with. It's not the greatest. A lot of the practice questions contradict what the book teaches and he has been frustrated more than once. However, he has also passed his first two exams so it's not atrocious, just be forewarned. He's also been using other tutorials online and had success with those.

The exam for practice management is terrible.
Only helpful for studying if you feel like looking up the exact section which disproves the answers in the Ballast practice exam wrong from the source material. They literally have a site for you to help them edit their product by reporting wrong answers - as if they couldn't hire an editor with the ridiculous prices they charge for study materials! only giving it one star because the frustration this caused me fueled a deep dive into the NCARB recommended study materials to verify that the practice exam was incorrect. Perhaps unsurprisingly reading the materials NCARB recommends is indeed helpful, so spend your $ on those instead.
PcM: contradicting information and oddly phrased questions.
Half of the questions are repeats from the 4.0 material. Glad I was able to get a copy cheap or I would have been very annoyed to have paid for the same material twice.
Not many questions per exam. One of the Programing and Analysis Case Studies says the project is in an R-4 zoning district and the zoning table only shows district R-1 through 3.......We'll see what else sucks. Might as well just find somebody's flash card set on Quizlet bc it has the same info in a better format.
